Revealing grain coarsening and detwinning in bimodal Cu under tension

چکیده

Abstract Metals with a bimodal grain size distribution have been found to both high strength and good ductility. However, the coordinated deformation mechanisms underneath ultrafine-grains (UFGs) coarse grains (CGs) still remain undiscovered yet. In present work, Cu 80% volume fraction of recrystallized micro-grains was prepared by annealing equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) processed ultrafine grained at 473 K for 40 min. The has an optimal strength-ductility combination (yield 220 MPa ductility 34%), larger shear fracture angle 83° area reduction 78% compared as-ECAPed UFG 410 MPa, 16%, 70°, 69%). Grain refinement detwinning growth twins were observed in fractured tensile specimen. underlying analyzed discussed.

Detwinning through migration of twin boundaries in nanotwinned Cu films under in situ ion irradiation

The mechanism of radiation-induced detwinning is different from that of deformation detwinning as the former is dominated by supersaturated radiation-induced defects while the latter is usually triggered by global stress. In situ Kr ion irradiation was performed to study the detwinning mechanism of nanotwinned Cu films with various twin thicknesses. Two types of incoherent twin boundaries (ITBs...

Experimental Evidence for the Development of Bimodal Grain Size Distributions by the Nucleation-Limited Coarsening Mechanism

It has recently been hypothesized that transient bimodal grain size distributions can arise from unimodal distributions during coarsening if the continued growth of a majority fraction of the crystals is arrested by the energy barrier to nucleate new layers. To test this hypothesis experimentally, SrTiO3 has been coarsened in a titania-rich liquid at 15001C. Measurements of the grain size distr...

Grain size effect on deformation twinning and detwinning

This article systematically overviews the grain size effect on deformation twinning and detwinning in face-centered cubic (fcc) metals. With decreasing grain size, coarse-grained fcc metals become more difficult to deform by twinning, whereas nanocrystalline (nc) fcc metals first become easier to deform by twinning and then become more difficult, exhibiting an optimum grain size for twinning. T...

Direct observation of grain rotations during coarsening of a semisolid Al-Cu alloy.

Sintering is a key technology for processing ceramic and metallic powders into solid objects of complex geometry, particularly in the burgeoning field of energy storage materials. The modeling of sintering processes, however, has not kept pace with applications. Conventional models, which assume ideal arrangements of constituent powders while ignoring their underlying crystallinity, achieve at ...
